Still remember Bayview Hotel that is located along Bencoolen Street? It has undergone some major changes – refurbishing and rebranding to become the new 30 Bencoolen. Just 5 minutes walk from Bencoolen Mrt Station, this hotel hides a hidden gem within it – LOCAL which has recently rolled out their special Chinese New Year dishes bound to satisfy all your tummies!

Helmed by the experienced, talented and renowned Chef Elvin, expect to enjoy a series of traditional and popular Chinese New Year classics but with a modern touch. Chef Elvin, who is also a frequent guest judge for cooking competitions, has reinterpreted and created palatable dishes such as Roasted Milk Fed Suckling Pig that is stuffed with Glutinous Rice and my favourite Braised Angus Beef Cheek in Crispy Yam Ring. In short, he has made Chinese New Year not so boring. If you’re looking for a conventional yet unconventional reunion dinner, here’s the place to go to! Before I forget, the classy ambience of the restaurant also captured my attention. I’m definitely looking forward to their All-Day menu!

Doesn’t all of them look appetising? And they are all reasonably-priced as well. LOCAL is really new and that explains why they don’t have a concrete menu yet. So, if you’re looking at celebrating your Lunar New Year at 30 Bencoolen, they have $288++ for 6 pax, $388 ++ for 10 pax and $588 ++ for 10 pax with the addition of a whole suckling pig.

LOCAL Freeze
Very refreshing but this was a tad too sweet for me!

30 Bencoolen “Sure HUAT” Yu Sheng
Confirm HUAT ah! LOCAL’s rendition of Yu Sheng was not over the top and it was really tasty. The Yu Sheng was refreshing, crunchy and has a good mix of sweet-sour-spicy combination.

Special Stuffed Whole Suckling Pig (Boneless)
I apologise if the first picture is too disturbing. As mentioned from the Chef, the piglets are killed when they are 3 months old (meat is leaner, cleaner). It’s my first time eating suckling pig stuffed with glutinous rice and I’ve got to say I love it. The skin was very crispy, and the inner meat was tender. There wasn’t any fats (if the ladies are concerned). The glutinous rice was fragrant, sticky and flavourful. Drizzle some of their in-house sauce onto the suckling pig, this was very pleasurable to the taste buds.

In House Roasted Organic Corn Fed Chicken with Crispy Garlic, Almond & Prawn Cracker
The picture does not do any justice to how delicious this dish was. It was well-fried, not too oily, flavourful and has a spicy kick to it. Chicken was well-marinted with spice, and was very tender. Very smart of the chef to add prawn crackers to give an extra crunch to the overall dish.

8 Hours Braised Angus Beef Cheek in Crispy Yam Ring
This was my favourite dish at LOCAL. It’s hard to find places in Singapore still doing this Traditonal Crispy Yam Ring, and even harder to find one that do it so perfectly. Yam was well-fried, not too oily and dry. The best part – it was soaked with the sauce from the 8 hours braised angus beef which was flavourful and tender. A must-try!

Sweetness of Great Harvest
Pleasing to the eyes, and very pleasurable to the taste buds. This deconstructed Orh-Nee is to die for. How to eat this? Mixed everything together to achieve maximun pleasure. Oh yes, remember to snap a photo first!
