Ichiban Boshi is a familiar name/brand to many. It has all along been a very popular Japanese chain in Singapore (knew about them when I was in JC), particularly for their contemporary Japanese dishes. To date, they have about 14 restaurants in Singapore with their newest outlet at the newly furnished Century Square. As usual, the queue was really long when I visited their outlet at Century Square (about 15 people was waiting to get a table) and I’ll be sharing the 3 of the speciality dishes exclusive at this outlet: 1) Mentai Hakata Nabe Gozen, 2) Jigokudaki Udon and 3) Daigakuimo Ice. So, if you’re staying around Tampines, you should totally check out the revamped Century Square and of course, pamper yourself with a sumptuous Japanese feast at the cosy Ichiban Boshi.
*A word of advice: It’s better to head there during off-peak hours because the crowd is really no joke (unless you’re willing to queue and wait)!
Mentai Hakata Nabe Goze
I was shocked at how generous the portion was. It comes with a Hotpot (contains veggies, meat and tofu), a plate of deep fried sweet potatoes, miso soup, a bowl of rice and two slices of watermelon. The broth was really flavourful and it goes really well with the rice. Sweet potatoes were well-battered and well-fried to achieve a nice crispiness, and they were not oily at all. Oh yes, not forgetting the sweet and refreshing watermelons to end off the hearty meal. Definitely a very-value-for-money set dish! Highly recommended!
I bet you must be asking where is the udon? Haha! I only took a picture of the dip (as seen above) because we couldn’t wait to place the udon into this addictive dip with onsen egg, pork and mushrooms. The sauce was fragrant and it wasn’t too salty as well. How to eat this? Mix them all up (with the udon) and trust me, super shiok!
This dessert was surprisingly good – great combination of sweet and savoury! Sweet potatoes had a great texture (not too tough or too mushy) and the sauce (if I’m not wrong, a mix of oyster sauce and brown sugar) paired with it really well. Of course, adding a classic Vanilla ice cream balances out the saltiness of the sauce and sweet potato. What a great creation this is!
