More and more cafes are sprouting around the North-East line (NEL), especially the area between Punggol and Serangoon. From family-oriented cafe – Whisk & Paddle to hipster spot – Lola’s Cafe, you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice. As a resident staying around this area for almost 20 years, I’ve compiled this ‘11 Cafes North-East Liners Need To Visit (Punggol-Serangoon Edition)‘ for avid cafe-hoppers! There are in no particular order and for those who thinks there’s nothing to do/eat around the area, you better think again!

1) Lola’s Cafe

Lola’s Cafe needs no introduction, especially for those who stays around Kovan. The cafe is usually packed (read: long queue) during the weekend – it’s best to make a reservation with them to avoid disappointment. Some of the MUST-TRY includes Avocado Eggs Benedict, Breakfast Butter Croissant, Nachos Cheese Fries, Honey Glazed Wings, Lemon Meringue Tart and many more!

2) Flavour Flings

When it comes to trend-setting, Flavour Flings comes to mind. It was the first cafe that kick-started the whole salted egg craze in Singapore, and later introduced a Raclette-themed menu which was also well-received by the public. 3) Ciel Patisserie 

CIEL Pâtisserie is about pure, unadulterated goodness in your favourite French based pastries and sweets. This is one of the most affordable and value-for-money dessert cafe you can find in Singapore! Made with the freshest and finest ingredients, Ciel takes pride in decadent desserts perfect for a hearty celebration or an everyday treat. 4) Eleven Strands (NEW)

Nestled along Yio Chu Kang Road (or behind Serangoon Stadium), Eleven Strands is a new and cosy cafe that has taken over the space by Kombi Rocks previously. Opened by the same folks at South Union Park, this up-and-coming cafe offers a decent mix of Italian, French & Asian cuisine at a reasonable price. With only two months into the F&B scene, Eleven Strands has been gaining quite the attention around the neighbourhood. You can find the full article: here!

5) Purist Patisserie

Who would’ve thought there’s a dainty French dessert cafe hidden within the private housing estates in the Lorong Ah Soo neighbourhood? Nestled within The Promenade @ Kilat, Purist Patisserie serves a decent range of exquisite and uniquely-flavoured French entremets. On top of that, the cafe also welcomes custom cake orders for all sorts of occasion.

Only open for walk-ins from Friday to Saturday – 12pm-6pm (Monday to Thursday strictly only for collection), expect to enjoy heart-throbbing entremets such as Fleur (signature), Wally Melon, Matcha Adzuki & many more! 6) The Plain Jane

Not Plain Jane at all. Also, one of my FAV spot for a good me time! Not only is the cafe beautifully-furnished, they also serve really delicate and nice Swiss rolls. My first visit to this cafe has got me really addicted to its cakes.

7) Whisk & Paddle 

If you are residing in Punggol or Sengkang, you should, no MUST be very familiar with the family-friendly cafe – Whisk & Paddle. Because this is so near my home, I’ll always have a coffee here during the weekend. Cafe is really spacious and the view is great. Also, they have a huge selection of Western food. Awesome place to chill and watch the world go by!

8) Rise & Grind Coffee Co.

For those staying around the Bukit Timah area, you would probably have heard of Rise & Grind. I was really impressed with their offerings and went back several times even thought they were quite out of the way for me. So happy to know they now have their second outlet around my area. Perfect place for #perfectbrunchgoals!

9) Two Bakers (NEW)

YAY! Two Bakers has opened their second outlet in Serangoon, taking over the space by Scissors Paper Stove previously. You no longer need to travel to Lavender for their brunch offerings. Oh yes, their pastries are to die-for and they are all reasonably-priced!

10) Amber Ember

New and minimalist space around the neighbourhood that serves really good coffee alongside sandwiches such as the Truffle Shrooms sandwich with Purple Mash!

11) Kooks Creamery 

Located at the heart of Serangoon, KOOKS Creamery is a small and unpretentious café that sells two types of Molten Lava Cookies (Chocolate & Matcha) and a wide range of hand-made artisan ice cream at a really affordable price. To combat the sweltering weather, this is the place to go!
