When my friends from overseas decide to pop by Singapore to visit me, Zichar is definitely one of the places I’ll bring them to. It’s something close to home and you can get a huge variety of comfort food without breaking the bank. Just last weekend, I found a hidden gem – Enjoy Eating House and Bar; retro-themed zichar-styled restaurant nestled within Kam Leng Hotel in Jalan Besar.

Just walking into the restaurant (more atas setting than the usual zichar places; plus there’s air-con so you won’t be sweating) and I already know the food was going to be good. It was 2.30pm on a Saturday and the restaurant was still fully packed!

I tried most of their signature dishes that afternoon and here are some that stood out for me – Grandma’s “Te Kah” Bee Hoon (this is damn good btw), Chef J’s BBQ Pork, Brandy White Fish Soup and Singapore-style Chilli Prawns! Brought my picky mum along and she was also impressed with the dishes.

So, are you a fan of Zichar too? Remember to check out Enjoy Eating House and Bar with a group of friends! I mean the more the merrier (order more to share)! Since the restaurant is pretty packed from 12 noon to 2.30pm, I would suggest that you head down after the stated timings if you prefer a quieter environment!

Chef-Owner Joel places strong emphasis on the food quality and all of the sauces are made in-house with no added MSG, and also the food is prepared to order. Oh yes, most of the recipes came from Chef Joel’s grandma!

Grandma’s “Te Kah” Bee Hoon
Passed down from his grandma (hence the name), this Bee Hoon is one of my favourite dish at the restaurant. Full of wok hei flavour, the noodles were springy and the braised pork leg was tender. Legit couldn’t stop after the first bite. This plate of goodness warrants a re-visit. Oh yes, I didn’t want to share this with anymore! #sorrybutnotsorry

Ugly Cabbage in Fish Sauce
Honestly, I don’t think this was ugly but just simple-looking. But you know what? This was damn awesome! Cabbage was super crunchy and it paired so well with the fish sauce. Definitely one of the side you must order when you’re here. Goes really well with rice!

Singapore-style Chilli Prawns
As the name already suggests, this is similar to our iconic Singapore Chilli Crab but instead, this was the prawn version. The sauce was really thick and you can taste the tomato flavour in it. Would have loved it even more if it was a tad spicier (but I guess they have to cater to the tourist crowd). Prawns were really fresh and crunchy and yes, it also comes with crispy fried mantou!

Brandy White Fish Soup
Oh my! You can legit taste the brandy in the soup and I liked it! This collagen-rich soup was flavoursome and milky, and it comes with a decent portion of fish meat.

Chef J’s BBQ Pork
This is another dish that I highly recommend you to get! The pork was grilled to perfection – tender and juicy; and it goes so well with the Thai homemade sauce. Secretly hoping for another portion! My mum is crazy over this dish – she ate more than half of the pork here!

Black Pepper Beef with Foie Gras
All your premium (atas) food in one bowl. Beef was flavoursome and tender, and the Foie Gras was handled pretty well – didn’t taste too gamey. But I’ll still go for the Pork above!

Crispy with Chef Joel’s Red Curry Sauce
The Sea Bass from the restaurant is sourced from a local seawater farm in the waters of Pulau Ubin that doesn’t use any antibiotics or chemical additives. Inspired by the Thai’s Red Curry, this fish was very appetising and flavoursome. It wasn’t too spicy. Oh yes, they have already cut the fish, making it extremely easy to eat! Kudos to that!

Teochew “Orh Ni”
I’m a huge fan of Orh Ni and the rendition here 😍 Texture was good, orh ni wasn’t too oily or sweet and yah, finish it myself!

Chendol Panna Cotta
This was not too bad. Gula Melaka was strong and it was not too sweet. But I’ll still choose the Orh Ni over this anytime!
